I was in the portrait making mood tonight. It started with Rachel because the light was a bit mystical outside this afternoon. So, I grabbed my camera and my 85 1.4 lens and headed out to find Rachel. She was down the street playing with friends, so I called her over. She saw my camera and said, “Oh, you need a picture?” The kids are so used to me me taking pictures now they just quickly pose for me and go back to what they were doing. She was a good sport. I specifically wanted a shot of her kind of looking up so I could get the diffused light from the cloudy sky to light up her eyes.
Then, Brian approached me later in the evening. He had to make a brochure all about him for class. Of course, it was 7:30 PM and it’s due tomorrow. He needs various shots of his life (family, hobbies, early childhood) and a headshot for the main image. So, we went all hard edged and got him a cool head shot. I set up a pseudo clam shell lighting. Shoot through umbrella with a diffused SB-800 up top. A large reflector on bottom. Brian sported some cool shades. After, I hit it with the “Sin City” treatment in Adobe’s Lightroom to give it an edgy look. Brian said it was “Gangsta!”
Here are the shots.

Absolutely love the portraits of my grandchildren. Brian looks so grown up (and is.) He is changing so much this year…getting so much more mature looking and handsome…losing his kid looks. The voice will come next I’m sure! Rachel just keeps getting prettier like her Mom. I love the DOF in this picture. I would love to put these on my desktop as my screensaver….can you send to me so I can do that? Great work on both of them. I see such improvement in your work every time I see your pictures Tom.
Aww… great portraits of them. I love how different both of their personalities come across.
You’re kids are awesome! I hope when I have kids they are that cool with getting pics of them all the time.
Both fantastic portraits!
